ABOUT ANAKAO

The Heart of Madagascar’s Vezo Fishermen

Anakao is a unique destination, tucked away on the southwest coast of Madagascar. It’s not a place you simply pass through — it's a journey that begins as soon as you arrive. This remote village is home to the Vezo people, an indigenous community known for their deep connection to the sea and their extraordinary fishing traditions.

How to Reach Anakao
Getting to Anakao is an adventure in itself and an integral part of your experience. Your journey starts by flying or traveling by jeep to Tulear (we can help you book your transfer). From there, at 9:00 AM, your luggage is loaded onto traditional Zebu-drawn carts to be transported to the motorboat waiting to whisk you across the stunning coastline to Anakao. The boat ride takes less than an hour, and once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by the tranquility of this peaceful village. Please be sure to pre-book your speedboat transfer from Tulear through Anakao Express. The return journey departs early in the morning, around 7:00 AM, so plan your activities accordingly.

Things to Keep in Mind
While traveling between Tulear and Anakao, you may encounter local vendors offering a variety of tours or activities. It’s important to be cautious and choose only certified, reliable operators. While few may seem enticing, most may fall short of expectations and, at worst, turn into real scams.

Accommodation
We do not offer on-site accommodation, but we’re happy to assist you in finding the perfect place to stay. There are several hotels nearby, catering to all budgets and preferences. Don’t hesitate to reach out for recommendations. Additionally, we offer a pick-up and transport service for guests between the hotels and our sports center.

Weather
Anakao enjoys a warm, coastal climate. Southern winters (June to September) are mild, with temperatures averaging 29°C during the day and cooling to 16°C at night. Summer (December to March) can be hot, with temperatures reaching up to 33°C. However, be aware that the wet season (January to April) can bring frequent rains. During this time, Il Camaleonte remains closed for water sports activities.

The Vezo People and Their Maritime Heritage
Anakao is a Vezo village, home to the Vezo people, an indigenous group with Southeast Asian and African roots. Stretching from Anakao to Morondava, the Vezo community is known for their impressive fishing skills. They are expert navigators and spend days at sea, chasing fish in their traditional pirogues (outrigger canoes). When forced to spend the night at sea, the Vezo use their sails to create makeshift tents, earning them the title of the "nomads of the sea." We invite you to discover this fascinating way of life as you explore the pristine beaches and islands around Anakao with the locals.

Payments and Currency
In Anakao, credit cards are not accepted, and there are no ATMs or banks. Be sure to withdraw enough money while in Tulear. You can pay for activities in cash using either Euros or Ariary, depending on the day’s exchange rates. For shopping, stop by SCORE supermarket in Tulear to pick up any necessities.
